Zehntner ZCC 2087 – Cross-Cut Adhesion Tester
Category: Cross-Cut Adhesion Testers
Manufacturer: Proceq / Zehntner
Article numbers: 43040500–43040504 / ZCC 2087
Application:
The Zehntner ZCC 2087 is a manual cross-cut adhesion tester for assessing the adhesion of single- and multi-coat systems. The pivoting cutter head supports a uniform, parallel cutting action and reduces the influence of variations in operator handling. Replaceable multi-cut blades enable testing in accordance with EN ISO 2409 and ASTM D3359.
Reproducible cross-cut adhesion testing
During a cross-cut test, a right-angled lattice pattern is cut through the coating to the substrate. The extent to which the coating detaches along the cut edges or within the lattice squares is then assessed. This allows the adhesion of the coating system to be classified.
- Pivoting cutter head for a uniform cutting action
- Reduced operator influence through parallel guidance of the cutter head
- Replaceable multi-cut blade for consistent cutting quality
- Versions for EN ISO 2409 and ASTM D3359
- Blade spacing of 1, 2 or 3 mm, depending on version and standard
- Ergonomic handle for controlled one-handed operation
- Suitable for single- and multi-coat systems
Advantage of the pivoting cutter head
The cutter head can adapt to the surface during movement. This guides the multi-cut blade more evenly without requiring the operator to apply additional pressure to the cutter head. Reproducible cuts can therefore be produced more easily, including by less experienced users.
Typical applications
- Adhesion testing of paints and coatings
- Quality control of single- and multi-coat systems
- Incoming-goods and production inspections
- Assessment of pretreatment and substrate adhesion
- Comparison of different formulations or application processes
- Laboratory testing and production-related quality control
Suitable surfaces
- coated metal surfaces
- painted test panels
- coated plastic surfaces
- wood and wood-based materials, depending on the surface and test configuration
- rigid and sufficiently flat specimens
- single- and multi-coat paint systems
Note: The suitability of the cross-cut test depends on factors including coating thickness, substrate, hardness and elasticity of the coating system.
Operation
- Select the appropriate version for the applicable standard and coating thickness.
- Clean the test surface and inspect it for damage.
- Hold the cross-cut tester only by the handle.
- Draw the multi-cut blade through the coating to the substrate using a uniform movement.
- Rotate the instrument by 90 degrees and make a second cut across the first set of cuts.
- Remove loose particles using the brush or adhesive tape as specified by the test standard.
- Inspect the lattice using the magnifier.
- Document the result according to the classification specified by the applicable standard.
Important operating notes
- Guide the tester with one hand using only the handle
- do not apply additional pressure to the pivoting cutter head
- produce the cuts at a uniform speed
- regularly inspect the multi-cut blade for wear and damage
- replace worn blades in good time
- evaluate the result strictly in accordance with the applicable standard
Zehntner ZCC 2087 versions
The versions differ in test standard, number of cutting edges and blade spacing. The appropriate version must be selected for the applicable standard and coating thickness.
Versions for EN ISO 2409
- 43040500 / ZCC 2087.1: 6 cutting edges, 1 mm blade spacing
- 43040501 / ZCC 2087.2: 6 cutting edges, 2 mm blade spacing
- 43040502 / ZCC 2087.3: 6 cutting edges, 3 mm blade spacing
Versions for ASTM D3359
- 43040503 / ZCC 2087.5: 11 cutting edges, 1 mm blade spacing
- 43040504 / ZCC 2087.6: 6 cutting edges, 2 mm blade spacing
Selecting the appropriate version
The applicable test standard, coating thickness and substrate properties are the main selection criteria.
- Test standard: determine whether EN ISO 2409 or ASTM D3359 applies
- Coating thickness: select the required blade spacing according to the standard
- Substrate: consider its hardness and surface properties
- Coating system: consider whether it is a single- or multi-coat system
- Blade condition: use only sharp and undamaged multi-cut blades
