Scrub Testing and Wet Abrasion

Scrub and abrasion testers are used to assess the resistance of coatings to repeated mechanical stress. This includes testing wet-scrub resistance, scrub resistance and resistance to repeated cleaning.

Automatic testing systems provide reproducible test sequences with defined stroke length, speed, cycle count and test load. Different scrub tools, weights, specimen holders and liquid-dosing options allow the test configuration to be adapted to various standards and coating systems.

The automatic ZAA 2600.SW Scrub and Wet Abrasion Tester combines freely adjustable test parameters, storable test profiles and a modular selection of standard-specific scrub sets.

Products

What are scrub and abrasion testers used for?

  • Testing wet-scrub, scrub and cleaning resistance
  • Assessment of the resistance of paints, varnishes and coatings
  • Quality control across batches, production lines and sites
  • Comparative testing following changes in formulation, process or raw materials
  • Development and optimization of new coating systems
  • Evaluation of resistance to repeated cleaning and mechanical stress
  • Testing according to defined standards and customer-specific procedures

Benefits at a glance

  • Reproducible: defined stroke length, speed, cycle count and test load
  • Configurable to standards: different scrub sets for international test standards
  • Efficient: storable test profiles for recurring test series
  • Flexible: different scrub tools, weights and specimen holders
  • Expandable: optional liquid dosing for wet-abrasion and cleaning tests

Standard-specific scrub sets

Suitable scrub sets and holders are available for different test methods. The required accessories depend on the applicable standard, specified test load and scrub material.

  • 43010940 / ACC1460: scrub set for ASTM D2486
  • 43010942 / ACC1462: scrub set for ASTM D3450
  • 43010944 / ACC1464: scrub set for ASTM D4213
  • 43010946 / ACC1466: scrub set for ASTM D4828
  • 43010948 / ACC1468: scrub set for ISO 11998
  • 43010949 / ACC1469: universal holder for different test configurations

Note: The test load, scrub material, specimen tray and quantity of test liquid must be defined according to the applicable standard or test procedure.

Liquid dosing for wet tests

Wet-abrasion and cleaning-resistance tests may require a defined quantity of water, cleaning medium or test liquid. An optional peristaltic pump enables controlled liquid supply during the test sequence.

  • controlled dosing during testing
  • suitable for recurring wet-abrasion tests
  • reduced manual dosing effort
  • more consistent test conditions during series testing
  • dosing quantity adjustable according to the standard or internal procedure
  • ACC1616: peristaltic pump for liquid dosing

Typical scrub or wet-abrasion test procedure

  1. Determine the applicable standard or test procedure.
  2. Select the appropriate scrub set and scrub material.
  3. Secure the specimen in the designated specimen tray or holder.
  4. Install the required test load and weight combination.
  5. Set the stroke length, speed and cycle count or select a stored test profile.
  6. Prepare the test liquid and dosing system for wet tests.
  7. Start the test and monitor the test sequence.
  8. Remove the specimen after the specified number of cycles.
  9. Evaluate and document abrasion, damage or cleaning performance according to the test procedure.

Selecting the appropriate test system

The test configuration depends on the standard, coating system, specimen, test load, scrub material and whether testing is performed dry or with liquid dosing.

  • Standard: for example ASTM D2486, ASTM D3450, ASTM D4213, ASTM D4828 or ISO 11998
  • Scrub set: select the configuration specified by the test procedure
  • Test load: configure the weight and holder according to the method
  • Specimen: consider its size, thickness and fixation
  • Scrub material: use the sponge, brush or other material specified by the procedure
  • Liquid dosing: determine the medium and dosing quantity for wet tests
  • Series testing: consider storable profiles and automatic dosing

Selection note: Tell us the applicable standard, coating system, test load and intended scrub material. We will recommend the appropriate combination of tester, scrub set, weights and liquid-dosing system.
