Application:
Zehntner ZUA 2000 universal applicators are used for the reproducible preparation of defined film drawdowns from paints, varnishes, coatings, adhesives and similar products. The gap height can be adjusted to suit the application. Different versions with film widths from 60 to 220 mm allow the applicator to be matched to various substrate and specimen sizes.
Adjustable gap height for different film drawdowns
Unlike applicators with a fixed gap height, the ZUA 2000 can be adjusted to suit different application requirements. The same applicator can therefore be used for different materials, film drawdowns and test series.

Note on the resulting film thickness
The selected gap height does not necessarily correspond to the actual resulting wet- or dry-film thickness. The result may be influenced by factors including viscosity, solids content, surface tension, drawdown speed and substrate.
Manual and automatic film application
The ZUA 2000 universal applicators can be drawn manually over the substrate or used with an automatic film applicator. Automatic use reduces operator-dependent differences in drawdown speed and movement.

Selecting the appropriate universal applicator
The appropriate version depends on the required film width, substrate and properties of the coating material.
- Film width: select a version suitable for the usable substrate or specimen width
- Gap height: adjust according to the required nominal film drawdown
- Material: consider viscosity, flow behavior and solids content
- Substrate: for example paper, film, metal, glass or test charts
- Working surface: select a glass, rubber-coated fabric or vacuum plate
- Application: determine whether the drawdown will be manual or automatic
