Zehntner ACC586 – Wire-Wound Film Applicator Rods
Category: Applicators, Drawdown Bars & Frames
Manufacturer: Proceq / Zehntner
Article numbers: 43011031–43011039 / ACC586
Application:
Zehntner ACC586 wire-wound film applicator rods are used for the fast and reproducible preparation of defined film drawdowns. They are suitable for paints, varnishes, coatings and similar materials and can be used manually or in combination with an automatic film applicator.
Uniform film drawdowns using a wire-wound rod
The wire winding meters the coating material as the applicator moves across the substrate. This allows uniform test films to be produced quickly for comparative test series, routine testing and specimen preparation.
- Defined nominal wet-film thicknesses from 25 to 250 µm
- Fast and straightforward film application
- Reproducible specimen preparation under constant conditions
- Suitable for manual and automatic use
- Suitable for laboratories, quality assurance and development
- Nine versions for different film drawdowns
Note on the resulting film thickness
The specified size describes the nominal wet-film drawdown of the wire-wound applicator rod. The actual wet- and dry-film thickness may be influenced by viscosity, solids content, surface tension, drawdown speed, substrate and other material properties.
Manual and automatic use
The ACC586 wire-wound rods can be drawn manually over the substrate or combined with an automatic film applicator. The working surface, drawdown speed and quantity of material should be kept constant to produce a uniform film.
- ZAA 2300: automatic film applicator for reproducible standard applications
- ZAA 2600.A: automatic film applicator with touchscreen control and storable application profiles
- Rubber-coated fabric: resilient working surface particularly suitable for wire-wound rods
- Glass plate: flat working surface for suitable applications
- Vacuum plate: flat fixation of thin and flexible substrates

Selecting the appropriate wire-wound rod
The nominal wet-film thickness is an important selection criterion. The material, substrate, working surface and application conditions should also be considered.
- Target wet-film thickness: select the required nominal size
- Material and viscosity: consider flow behavior and solids content
- Substrate: for example film, paper, metal, glass or test charts
- Working surface: preferably use suitable rubber-coated fabric or a flat base plate
- Application method: determine whether the rod will be used manually or automatically
- Drawdown speed: keep the speed constant during comparative test series
