Zehntner ZAF 2010 – Four-Sided Film Applicators
Category: Applicators, Drawdown Bars & Frames
Manufacturer: Proceq / Zehntner
Article numbers: 43020300, 43020301, 43020303 and 43020304 / ZAF 2010
Application:
The Zehntner ZAF 2010 is a manual four-sided film applicator for the reproducible preparation of defined film drawdowns from paints, varnishes, coatings, adhesives and similar products. Each version has four fixed gap heights. The applicator is rotated to select the side required for the respective film drawdown.
Four fixed gap heights in one applicator
The ZAF 2010 combines four application gaps in one compact frame. For each film drawdown, the applicator is rotated so that the required gap height rests on the substrate. Different nominal film drawdowns can therefore be produced using a single applicator.
- Four fixed gap heights per film applicator
- Quick selection by rotating the applicator
- Reproducible film drawdowns under consistent application conditions
- Two film widths of 60 or 80 mm
- Suitable for manual and automatic use
- Suitable for laboratories, quality assurance and research and development
Note on the resulting film thickness
The gap height describes the nominal film drawdown. The actual wet- and dry-film thickness may be influenced by factors including viscosity, solids content, surface tension, drawdown speed and substrate.
Manual and automatic film application
The ZAF 2010 can be drawn manually over the substrate or used with an automatic film applicator. Automatic use reduces operator-dependent differences in drawdown speed and movement.
- ZAA 2300: automatic film applicator for reproducible standard applications
- ZAA 2600.A: automatic film applicator with touchscreen control and storable application profiles
- Glass plate: rigid and flat working surface for numerous applications
- Vacuum plate: flat fixation of thin or flexible substrates
- Manual use: requires a uniform drawing movement and constant speed

Zehntner ZAF 2010 four-sided film-applicator versions
The versions differ in film width and gap configuration. Please specify the complete product designation or article number when submitting an enquiry.
- 43020300 / ZAF 2010.6030: 60 mm film width
- 43020301 / ZAF 2010.6050: 60 mm film width
- 43020303 / ZAF 2010.8030: 80 mm film width
- 43020304 / ZAF 2010.8050: 80 mm film width
Note: Versions with the same film width have different gap configurations. The required nominal film drawdowns are therefore decisive when selecting a version.
Operation
- Select the required gap height.
- Rotate the film applicator to the corresponding side.
- Position and securely fix the substrate on a flat working surface.
- Apply the coating material in front of the applicator in the drawdown direction.
- Draw the applicator over the substrate at a uniform speed.
- Clean the applicator immediately after use.
- Dry, condition and evaluate the test film according to the intended method.
Selecting the appropriate version
The appropriate version depends on the required film width and nominal film drawdowns.
- Film width: select 60 or 80 mm to suit the usable specimen width
- Gap configuration: consider the required nominal film drawdowns
- Material: consider viscosity, flow behavior and solids content
- Substrate: for example paper, film, metal, glass or test charts
- Working surface: use a flat glass or vacuum plate
- Application method: determine whether the applicator will be used manually or automatically
Alternative applicators
Additional applicator types are available for other film widths or finely graduated and adjustable film drawdowns.
- 43020100–43020105 / ZUA 2000: universal applicators with adjustable gap height and film widths from 60 to 220 mm
- 43010997–43011030 / ACC378: profile rods with fixed sizes from 4.57 to 171.45 µm
- 43011031–43011039 / ACC586: wire-wound film applicator rods with nominal wet-film thicknesses from 25 to 250 µm
